We believe children are called by name to participate in God’s loving work.
Even the youngest disciples are capable of an authentic response to God’s word and presence through the body of Christ. At First Pres, children have their own Ash Wednesday and Tenebrae services, and their own activities during stewardship and other congregational events. In this way, we provide meaningful activities for our children and prepare the next generation of Christian discipleship.
Our Children and Family Ministries begin in the nursery and continue to nurture and shape your child’s faith through fourth grade, when your child graduates to our youth ministry.
Nursery & Pre-School
On Sundays, we introduce our youngest disciples to the life and love of Jesus Christ through Bible storytelling, arts and crafts, music, and free play. Located in spacious, kid-friendly Westminster Hall, our classes are full of creativity, learning, laughter, and play. (Your child will love the “Teddy Bear Lair”!)

Godly Play: Age 4 through Fourth Grade
Godly Play is a narrative-based curriculum that incorporates worship, Bible stories, and other activities designed to bring children into the presence of God. Storytellers form a circle of worship to tell the stories of God and the people of God, drawing on beautifully crafted materials to engage your child’s attention and imagination. We invite the children to enter into the stories, and to wonder about God’s story and their place within it.
Following the story circle is a time for children to ponder the story creatively, through art projects and engaging activities Godly Play offers children a safe space to explore, worship, and wonder, as they respond personally and creatively to God.
Children of all ages are welcome in every worship service. By fully including our children, we teach them the practice of worship and help them develop their own, authentic worship. We also keep a well-stocked art cart for those children who learn better when they have something for their hands to do!
During the academic year, many families worship together during one service hour, and participate in Sunday School and adult learning during another. In July and August, we intentionally welcome and include children in our services.
Vacation Bible School & Other Events
Every summer, Vacation Bible School brings children, youth, and adults together for an exciting week of learning through storytelling, drama, music, worship, and hands-on activities.
Since 2011, we have held Vacation Bible School for children and youth in partnership with Cedro del Sinai church in Ensenada. We lead worship, games, skits, crafts, get to hold babies, and serve lunch
to mothers and children. Afterward we go to chapel services with other church groups at Rancho el Refugio, with time to relax and have fun together. Many students return year after year to see children and mothers they’ve met and to deepen relationships. High school students are fully immersed, present, and all-in such that they consistently call this trip “the best week of their year.”
First Pres hosts other special events and services for kids and families throughout the year. These events are usually scheduled around important holidays and traditions of the church community. Watch the calendar for details on upcoming events.
